History of the Tournament & Scholarship
The heart and soul of Rams Baseball Boosters is the Annual Brian Beato Memorial Baseball Tournament. Since 2012, the Brian Beato Memorial Baseball Tournament has honored the legacy of Brian Beato, a sophomore and a 2nd baseman at Millikan High School, who had just finished his first Varsity Season when, tragically, he was struck by a car on June 1, 2012.
Brian is the son of Lisa Beato, head Junior Varsity Baseball Coach. At Millikan High School, Brian was a two-sport athlete. Along with baseball, Brian was a shooting guard on the basketball team. Baseball was the sport that he had the most passion for. He grew up playing baseball at ELB, Heartwell Pony, and the Oakley Stingrays. Playing on the Long Beach/Lakewood border allowed Brian to share his baseball talents, his outgoing personality and charisma with teammates that he would end up competing against at Lakewood, Poly, Wilson, and Jordan.
The 1st Brian Beato Memorial Baseball Tournament was played in July 2012. Coach Keven Gail, Tournament Director every year since, said “It was a way to get back on the field and honor Brian in a way that he would have enjoyed.” Coach Lisa Beato said, “The baseball community has always been so supportive to our family. This has made it easier and every time I am on the field I feel Brian.”
Beato Memorial Scholarship
To date the Tournament has raised over $20,000 which has been given to Millikan Baseball Seniors to assist with them attending college. The Brian Beato Scholarship Fund is for young men who show the same fantastic qualities that Brian showed for the love of life and baseball. How to Apply
- Deadline to apply is 5:00 pm on Friday, April 28th
- Seniors may submit applications and questions to Coach Keven Gail via email or text
- Scholarship award winners will be announced at the Annual Baseball Banquet on May 1st
